March 2026: The Encyclopedia of Jesuit Translation Culture in Poland–Lithuania, 1564–1820

The Encyclopedia of Jesuit Translation Culture in Poland–Lithuania, 1564–1820 examines the Jesuits’ profound influence on the religious, cultural, and intellectual landscape of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, spanning from their arrival in 1564 to their final expulsion from the Russian empire in 1820. During this period, Jesuits translated religious texts, educational materials, classical works, and scientific treatises into Polish, Lithuanian, and Ruthenian, using these translations as tools to spread Catholicism, promote humanist education, and disseminate scientific knowledge throughout the region. The encyclopedia is structured into two parts—a Macropedia with 70 overviews of major translation trends and a Micropedia with some 300 detailed entries on individual translators and 100 on frequently translated authors—offering readers both broad historical perspectives and focused analyses of this formative period in Poland–Lithuania’s pan-European context. This open online project is being built incrementally and is expected to be completed in 2028.
